Watershed Stewards Program.

Into each life a little rain must fall…so why not make the most of it? The Watershed Stewards Program, a joint program of Clark County Environmental Services and WSU Clark County Extension, is offering the very popular rain barrel workshop on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the 78th Street Heritage Farm (1919 NE 78th Street, Vancouver) from 9:00-11:00 am.

Rain barrels are a good way to divert some of your home’s stormwater runoff and to save water for the garden on dry days. The workshop includes instruction on assembly and installation, barrel, parts and snacks. At just $35, this is one of the best rain barrel deals in town!

Register online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/265524. The Workshop is free, but you can pre-purchase a rain barrel that you make in class. Supplies are limited to 22 rain barrels per class, so pre-purchase your barrel to assure a rain barrel.

For more information or to pay by cash or check, contact Jenifer.naas@clark.wa.gov or call 360-397-6060 ext 5712.

Celebrating Vancouver’s Past and Future.

In 1830 Clark County’s first apple harvest occurred – one apple. Planted near Fort Vancouver in 1826, the Old Apple Tree is considered the oldest in the Northwest and the matriarch of Washington State’s apple industry. The annual Old Apple Tree Festival will take place this year on Saturday, October 6, 2012 between 11 am and 4 pm at Old Apple Tree Park (114 Columbia Way) by the Fort Vancouver Historic Site.

As a result of last year’s success, the 2nd Annual Scarecrow Contest returns to the annual Old Apple Tree Festival this year. The Scarecrow contest is hosted and sponsored by Vancouver Watersheds Alliance, and is free to the first 20 people that send in applications. Prizes will be awarded to the best three ‘traditional’ scarecrows on display at the Old Apple Tree Festival. For an application and entry rules, visit Vancouver Watersheds Alliance, or call 360-852-9189.

“Providing family fun, food and history of Vancouver’s Old Apple Tree, the festival celebrates our community’s legacy. Throughout the day Urban Forestry Commissioners give away cuttings from the Old Apple Tree (cuttings are limited and will be given out until they are gone) This is a free, family friendly event with activities for children, fruit tree pruning workshops, food, live music, apple cider pressing, tours of Fort Vancouver, and a scarecrow contest.”

*Thanks, Emily H. of Vancouver Watersheds Alliance for contributing to Clark County Live!
